Yuliia Chystiakova: "Conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV) in Ukraine has emerged since the beginning of the Russian aggression in 2014. Unfortunately, neither the Ukrainian state itself nor the international community paid much attention to this problem. Only after the full-scale invasion in 2022 have we seen steps taken toward establishing a reparation system for the survivors".
Yuliia Chystiakova is a lawyer and researcher with a PhD in law from the National University “Odesa Law Academy”. She is the author of more than 50 scholarly publications and has over a decade of teaching, research, and practical experience in European and international law. Yuliia's work focuses on the protection of human rights during armed conflicts, particularly illegal detention sites and conflict-related sexual violence.
Since 2022 Yuliia has continued her academic activities at the University Paris Nanterre, supported by the PAUSE program, and has participated as an expert and speaker at numerous international conferences and training programs. Since October 2024 she has been permanently based in Kyiv, where Yuliia coordinates projects on human rights and transitional justice.
Yuliia is currently developing research on “Legal mechanisms and perspectives of a comprehensive reparation system for the survivors of conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine.” In Vienna, Yuliia will study and compare reparation models for conflict-related sexual violence survivors used in post-conflict countries. She also plans to build professional connections that could support the introduction of an effective post-war recovery system within Ukrainian society.
This Friday, 17 October, at 18:00, Yuliia Chystiakova invites you to Dialogbüro Vienna for an open discussion on a topic that still receives far too little attention — conflict-related sexual violence and the support measures for survivors, and how they have evolved.
Yuliia will be joined by Iryna Dovgan, Head of SEMA Ukraine, a non-governmental organization of women survivors of conflict-related sexual violence in the Russian–Ukrainian war.
