The Empty Chair. On the role of personal narratives in memory work

In 2025 we have presented a photobook by Dasha Karetnikova "Motherland hears, motherland knows". It is an investigation and photographic documentation of the author’s family history, deeply intertwined with and traumatized by the Soviet GULAG. In 2026, Karetnikova took part in Les Rencontres d'Arles 2026, one of the world’s leading photography festivals and a major international platform for contemporary photography. In this article Karetnikova share her insights on the role of personal narratives in memory work.
