About the Exhibition

On August 23, 1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression pact that, through a secret supplementary protocol, divided Eastern and Central Europe into spheres of influence. Known as the Hitler–Stalin Pact, this agreement paved the way for the outbreak of the Second World War — beginning with the German invasion of Poland, soon followed by Soviet expansion into Poland and subsequently into Finland, the Baltic States, and parts of Romania. Although the alliance collapsed with Germany’s attack on the Soviet Union in June 1941, its repercussions continue to shape the historical memory and identities of European nations to this day.
The exhibition “Riss durch Europa: Die Folgen des Hitler-Stalin-Pakts” (“A Rift through Europe: The Consequences of the Hitler–Stalin Pact”) examines the enduring impact of this pact and the diverse ways it is remembered across Europe. By engaging with the intertwined yet divided histories of Eastern and Central Europe, the exhibition encourages reflection on how an understanding of the past can inform our perception of the present — a theme of particular relevance in light of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.
