7 JULY | Film Screening: "Defiant Hearts" by Katarzyna Swinarska

The film trilogy "Defiant Hearts" is inspired by the dichotomous nature of a woman artist's desire — her search for fulfillment both in the specifically feminine sphere and in art. "Defiant hearts" are hearts hungry for love, craving the extreme emotions available to women, yet also seeking aesthetic and intellectual experience — insatiable hearts. The first two parts of "Defiant Hearts," devoted to artist-mothers and to artists who, for various reasons, have no children, were awarded the Grand Prize at the Gdańsk Art Biennale 2023. The films will be introduced by the author, Polish visual artist and filmmaker Katarzyna Swinarska.

About the films

Defiant Hearts 1 (28 min)
Katarzyna Swinarska, as a mother of three children and an artist who for many years after her studies could not deal with art, decides to take up the topic that is most important to her and her work. She invites to participate in her film such artists as: Honorata Martin, Anna Orbaczewska, Ania Witkowska, Anna Steller, Anna Reinert… who successfully combine their artistic career with motherhood. Each of them, in turn, locks up in the cabin of a music studio to talk about how they manage to reconcile their ideals, ambitions and desires with the difficult everyday life in a conservative and patriarchal society.

Defiant Hearts 2 (25 min)
The movie “Defiant Hearts” has been followed by “Defiant Hearts, Part 2” about women artists who chose to have no children.

Defiant Hearts 3 (circa 30 min)
The third part is about old women artists, who probably know what’s more important: Art or Love?
