30 June | Pride Month Film Night

On the last day of Pride Month, join us for a special movie night.

We’ll be screening I’ll Be There: Stories of Parents of Queer Children — a collection of three short documentaries from the program of the LGBTQ+ film festival Side by Side*. Through personal and moving stories, the films explore queer identity, community, acceptance, and family relationships. Created by the Plus Golos** movement, these documentaries have been featured at a number of film festivals and offer an intimate look at the experiences of queer people and their families. Learn more about the films below, and we hope to see you on Tuesday!

Not Alone

Germany, 2024, 25 min.

“Not Alone” is a documentary film about mothers and fathers of gay, lesbian, and transgender people from Georgia, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine who travel to Berlin to join Pride together. They live under one roof, prepare for the march — for many, it’s their first Pride — make posters, cook borscht, and reflect on how their relationships with their queer children have changed over time. Around a big table, the parents share their stories, break down the stereotypes they’ve faced, and talk about the journey they’ve taken toward acceptance.

Your Son and Grandson

Three generations of a family in search of understanding. Larisa and her mother Natalia are getting to know their teenage son and grandson Jake anew after he cam out as a transgender guy. They learn to support each other despite unfulfilled expectations and prejudices. Path to acceptance of a new and unfamiliar identity of a loved one can be long and difficult.
The film was made by the teams of the "Plus Golos" movement and "Quarteera" with the financial support of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the Civil Society Cooperation program.

What Are Those Prides For?

Natalia is a mother of a homosexual son and activist of the inernational parents movement in support of LGBTQ+ people "Plus Voice" goes to Hamburg for the pride march. She wants to find her answer to the question: What are prides for? Natalia walks out to pride with an "I love my gay son" placard, and dozens of queer people coming up to her to hug and thank her for the support they often don't find in their own families. She learns firsthand that pride is more than just a festival with colorful costumes and music. Despite the outward joy and fun, behind this event is a long struggle for equality, and it is not over yet.
"Plus Golos" is an international movement of parents of queer children that seeks to helps families to navigate the path to acceptance and become allies to their kids.

"Side by Side", through a range of mediums - opinion columns, special content features, literature, podcasts, cinema, visual and digital arts, online discussions, debates, webinars and trainings - draws together a rich and eclectic range of opinion, knowledge and experience from a broad spectrum of disciplines, in order to discuss contemporary and historical debates relating to sexual orientation, gender identity, feminist and human rights issues in the Russian language.
